BEGINNING CLASSICAL FIGURE DRAWING WITH TIMOTHY BREWER

A classical approach to the figure, which will introduce the student to constructive anatomy: skeletal structure, bony landmarks and musculature. Dynamic symmetry, mass, light and shade tie the figure together. Expressive techniques will be explored using traditional media: black, red and white charcoal/conte on toned paper.

This class will provide a supportive and creative environment for adults with diverse levels of experience to create from the imagination as well as draw from life. The course is open to all, whatever your level of experience. We will experiment with various drawing materials such as charcoal, pastels, ink and different types of pencils, in traditional to contemporary approaches. Some alternative approaches such as blind drawing and movement are used to enhance creativity. The assignments are designed to bring out the best creative ideas of every participant, whether you are an expert or a novice.

 


SUNSET ON THE HUDSON: LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH DAVID LOEB

Painting landscape from observation in oil. Students will paint outdoors until the light fades, then move into the studio to continue working from sketches and memory. Space, light, atmosphere, and color will be emphasized, as well as composition and informal aspects, such as sense of place and mood. Traditional oil painting technique will be discussed. Individual critiques and group discussions will be held. Historical examples will be cited extensively, and representational painting will be viewed in its larger context within contemporary art.

 

 


PLASTER SCULPTURE WITH KIRSTEN KUCER

This course is an introduction to sculptural materials and processes. Using simple hand tools to manipulate plaster, students will learn basic sculptural methods such as subtraction, addition, and manipulation. Slide lectures and discsions of the masters--Hepworth, Noguchi and more—will help to guide students, while placing emphasis on the individual’s creative development.

 

 

ARE YOU RIGHT OR LEFT? Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain with NINA ELTON

Students will learn the concept developed by Betty Edwards that there is a dual nature to human thinking: Verbal, analytical thinking is located in the left hemisphere of the brain, while perceptual, creative thought occurs primarily on the right side. Students will explore exercises that engage the right brain and free up the imagination. Adults & teens 15+

 

 

DRAWING & MULTI-MEDIA WORKSHOP FOR TEENS

This ongoing workshop series includes lessons in drawing and 2-D design taught by working artists Ada Cruz and Barbara Smith Gioia. Each session is designed to help students learn new techniques, to develop and enhance observation drawing skills, composition layout, light and shadow, depth and perspective and understanding what makes a “finished” drawing. Sessions include landscape, still-life, figure drawing and more. Exercises and lessons are also designed to help students who want to develop portfolios .

 

 

ETCHING WORKSHOP with ELANA GOREN

$170 + $25 material fee

Etching, a popular intaglio printmaking process, is a way to create rich drawings produced as multiple identical prints (editions). Although editioning has been the traditional function of etching processes, the art form has evolved to become a more experimental way of creating printed pieces as unique prints as well as editions. Through demonstration and hands-on experience, this introduction to etching will include: How to coat the etching plate with ground; drawing into the ground with etching tools; experimenting with various techniques of inking the plate and experiencing the great satisfaction of producing a beautiful etching print. Adults 18+

 

 

LANDSCAPE PAINTING SEMINAR with TIMOTHY BREWER

A landscape painting seminar focusing on space, light, and atmospheric effects in Nature: time of day effects, dome of the sky, clouds, water, trees and rocks will be addressed. Students should bring small portable easel, paints and small toned canvas or panels. Additional material and paint preparation will be discussed with enrolled students.

 

 


GET READY FOR ARTISTS ON LOCATION with DAISY dePUTHOD

$85 plus $10 materials fee

April 25, 9:30am – 4:30pm

 

Learn how to successfully complete a painting outside in one sitting. Students will learn how to complete quick value studies for capturing light, mass and form to develop strong compositions. Studies are critical in enabling students the time – once they move to the easel - to concentrate on painting, understanding warm and cool colors and working with a limited palette. Oil is the preferred medium for this class. Teacher will discuss materials with registered students prior to class. Adults 18+

SPRING FEVER Workshops   Saturdays in May 10am - 1pm

Join us on a Spring Saturday in May and let your creativity blossom! Come with a “seed” and “leave” with a work of art. Our Cabin Fever Workshops were a resounding success in February. And so, here by popular demand, we bring you SPRING!  There’s something for every age and every skill level. Participants can sign up for one or for all. And the price is right! Sign up for one at $40, or for 2 at $35 each, 3 or more $30 each. Plus a small $5 material fee for each.

INSIDE OUT   The cure for the blues? The GREENS!(for adults)

A follow-up to “Outside In” --Sit on the river bank and watch greens bursting forth all around you. Capture a moment in time with fresh color in soft pastels. Teaching Artist Sheilah Rechtschaffer allows all levels of experience - from budding artists to full blown blossoms - with individual instruction and an emphasis on color and expressive technique.

DRYPOINT   Time to get your feet wet (for adults)

For those who have never tried printmaking, drypoint is the perfect way to start. This basic intaglio printing process produces a soft feathery richness of line. Teaching Artist Elana Goren will introduce the technique of drawing directly into a metal plate with etching tools, experimenting with various techniques of inking the plate and, finally, realizing the joy of producing a beautiful drypoint print.

COLLAGE   It’s not just for kids! (for adults)

Learn from the masters, Picasso, Matisse, Rauchenberg, who used collage to find new ways of seeing and ultimately changed modern painting. Teaching Artist and Painter Martee Levi will guide adult students using simple materials to discover exciting compositions – with a twist. Draw with scissors, paint with wood, sculpt with paint!
For those who took this with Martee in February, she will have something new for you!

OUT OF LINE   Where Grown-ups are wild flowers (for adults)

Teaching artist Jaanika Peerna insists that her grown-up students draw out of the lines and discover what kids knew at birth – that it’s FUN. Create beautiful drawings free of spirit using the wrong hand or working with closed eyes.Come reveal your inner lines, drawn with special water soluble wax-pencils. See those lines transform by applying water in the second phase of the workshop. You will be amazed by your own expressive masterpieces.

FETISH POT CONNECTIONS  for the fetishist in you (for adults)

CONNECTIONS. Ceramic artist and chief fetishist Edith Ehrlich will teach students how to prepare a pot for attaching adornments. Be sure to bring baubles, bangles, beads, bells, beans, bones, gems, leather, sticks, quills, metal, nails, shards, wire, wood, whatever small trinkets you like. We will also have lots here for you. We will fire your pot for Part 2 on May 23 when you can make connections to create a unique Fetish Pot.

ARTIST ON LOCATION  Spring is in the au plein air!(for adults)

Don’t miss this semi-annual event. Join the nearly 100 artists in au plein air painting! Paint all day and auction your work later under our big tent on the landing. Check out our full-day, April 25 au plein air workshop in this brochure. And if you don’t want to paint, just come join the fun and watch the artists at work and the entertaining auctioneers. STENCIL PRINT  Spring Screening (for adults)

During this workshop, students will learn paper stencil silk screen printing and complete a series of four prints. Teaching Artist Ada Pilar Cruz will teach students how to create stencils that start as a minimal pattern or shape and build to a more complex composition by layering and over printing - others’ stencils for a variety of compounded effects.

 

 

May 23
BASIC BEADING   Bedazzle yourself (for adults)

In the first half of the workshop, students will learn the basic techniques of beading and complete a single-strand bracelet. Jeweler Glenn Arkin will begin with a short lesson on jewelry making. (Beads, parts and tools will be provided.) During the second half of the workshop, students may complete a second bracelet or a necklace for an additional charge. Not only will you go home adorned, you’ll go home a jewelry maker.

“FLOAT YOUR BOAT” PRIMER  Where art & physics mate (for all ages)

Learn about the fine art of displacement, buoyancy and center of gravity --AND create a work of art. Building Bridges, Building Boats Executive Director David Hardy will help you create a floating sculpture which will launch on May 30th at Garrison Art Center’s fabulous flotilla fiesta, FLOAT YOUR BOAT. Make sure you shanghai parents and friends and set sail with us!

“FLOAT YOUR BOAT”  A SPECIAL ART CENTER FAMILY EVENT

Celebrating the quadricentenial of Henry Hudson’s sail up our river! Come on down to the river’s edge and create your own Floating Sculptures. We’ve shanghai’ed a talented and motley crew of artists, builders, craftsmen, frogmen, kayakers and captains who are volunteering to collaborate with you, your family and all your favorite river rats. You will learn about how to make things float – displacement, bouancy, center of gravity - or you can just use the sink or float method. We’ll provide all manner of shipwrecked materials –and you can bring yours too- and launch our works of art on a cleverly rigged flotilla line using the spectacular Hudson as our canvas. Building commences at high noon, and launches after 3 pm. Bring your own lunch and a sandwich for the frogman! We’re casting a wide net, so GET ABOARD EARLY. FREE FOR ALL.

 Students will be introduced to famous artists and their masterpieces. Here is an opportunity to paint just like the masters! Impasto paintings in the style of Van Gogh, abstract collage like Brach and Picasso, watercolors, bold and sensuous, like Georgia O’Keefe. Drawing skills, color mixing and application techniques will all be covered. Ages 7-11
